Edward Bangs Drew papers, 1882-1906.

The papers of Edward B. Drew, born in Orleans, Mass., in 1843. He graduated from Harvard in 1863, and went on to a 40-year career in various customs posts in China, as well as that of postal commissioner in Fukien province. He left China permanently in 1906. The papers are for the most part in Chinese, and consist of calling cards and correspondence, with a few broadsides and other publications. The only items in English are thank-you and farewell notes from the Foochow post office and customs house staffs. There is one box of family photographs taken in various cities in China.

Drew (Harvard, B.A. 1863; M.A. 1868) was born in 1843. He went to China in 1865 at the invitation of Robert Hart, Inspector-General of [Chinese] Customs , and became Commissioner of Customs in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. He was appointed by the Kuang-hsü emperor to serve as secretary of the Chinese embassy on Special Ambassador Li Hung-chang's visit to the U.S. and Canada in 1896.
